Tensions remain between the United States, Russia, and Iran, and any further conflict could lead to a possible world war 3. Now, Russia has since sent a warning to the US, saying that they do not have a problem selling arms to the Islamic nation.
The Russian ambassador to Iran Leevan Jagarian revealed that Moscow does not have a problem in selling arms to Iran, specifically, S-400 systems, when the arms embargo the United Nations expires come October 18. Speaking to Iran’s Resalat news outlet, Jagarian added that Moscow is not afraid of the threats coming from the US President Donald Trump and that they will continue to uphold their commitments.
This statement follows Russia’s move to reject sanctions the US plans to place on Iran. Moscow dismissed the sanctions as absurd, noting that Washington has no legal or political authority to impose them. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo then warned that the US will impose sanctions on Russia instead if they continue to refuse to reimpose the UN sanctions on Iran.
Washington has since turned in a letter to the UN Security Council accusing Tehran of refusing to comply. Pompeo insisted that the measures that were suspended in part of a 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran were now back in place even as allies have voiced opposition to the move. Pompeo added that the US has now re-imposed the sanctions as a “snapback” mechanism in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. However, the other countries involved in the deal – Germany, France, China, Russia, and the United Kingdom – alerted the council, saying that they were not made aware of the move by Washington.
Aside from tensions between Russia, Iran, and the US, there is also conflict between the US and China. Washington and Beijing have had frayed relations over the past several months, from the trade war to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which Trump has constantly tried to pin the blame on Beijing. China’s grievance towards the US over its intervention in the South China Sea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan has also added to the strain.
During a gathering of foreign ministers from the US, Japan, India, and Australia also known as The Quad in Tokyo, Pompeo blasted Beijing for “exploitation, corruption, and coercion” as China’s expansionist stance is constantly being resisted.
