The January 6 insurrection at the Capitol left dozens of police officers who responded to the attack severely injured with one officer among the five that were killed. Federal prosecutors said that the data from a review of bodycam footage revealed the extent of the violence that occurred during the insurrection.
Politico reports that federal prosecutors said Wednesday that following an extensive review of the bodycam footage compiled during the Capitol insurrection, there are around 1,000 instances that can be labeled as assaults on police officers. The result came from a review of over 2,900 police bodycam videos that have over 2,300 hours worth of footage from the incident. The outlet also reports that the prosecutors disclosed in their filing that they are already in the process of uploading 7,000 hours worth of surveillance footage from the Capitol to their evidence-collection systems.
The filing also revealed that an additional 7,000 hours worth of footage was deemed irrelevant to the long-running case. The insurrection came as a result of the constant peddling of the false claim of election or voter fraud by the disgraced former President Donald Trump and his allies. This was made worse by Republican lawmakers that publicly stated their intent to vote against Joe Biden’s election victory certification.
The numbers in the filing revealed were related to the case of another insurrectionist Couy Griffin, who founded “Cowboys for Trump,” who has been unsuccessful in convincing the courts that he is only a “political prisoner” that is being persecuted for his political beliefs.
Many analysts and commentators, including officials, have already warned that a repeat of January 6 is likely due to a failed attempt the first time. Lawmakers and intelligence officials have already been raising concerns about a rally that would take place in Washington DC on September 18 organized by far-right extremists to demand “justice” for the insurrectionists who have been arrested and detained by the authorities.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that people knowledgeable in the matter revealed that far-right militia groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are also planning to attend the event. Law enforcement agencies have already said that they are now prepared to tackle any possible acts of violence that may come as a result of the rally.
